General info about the studio

How are the designs of Studio Pieter Stockmans manufactured?

Studio Pieter Stockmans’ designs are handmade in our own atelier in Genk, Belgium. Making a handmade product by Studio Pieter Stockmans takes a lot of time and patience. Porcelain cannot be shaped; on the contrary, it shapes those who make it. Each operation, 17 in total, requires meticulous attention. Each step in the process contributes to the exceptional end result.

How many pieces does the studio produce?

Overproduction is one of the biggest threats in the world. The atelier of Studio Pieter Stockmans only makes what we really are going to sell, from your request. This ‘on-demand’ system guarantees meticulous work, without mass production.

Why Stockmansblue?

For Piet Stockmans, the intense blue is an artistic signature. It makes each piece recognisable, emphasising uniqueness in a world of mass production. Moreover, this blue radiates tranquillity, serenity and reflection. It aligns with a sustainable attitude to life: slowing down, appreciating, stilling. The colour is applied by hand in a careful, sustainable way. This sober use of colour (often just blue on white) underlines a “less is more” approach that combats waste and focuses on quality over quantity.

Do you create personalised tableware?

Personalisation is possible for a number of birth, birthday and wedding gifts. In addition, also for urns. For projects, more options are available on request.

How durable is the colour?

The colours which are applied by hand will never fade. They are baked in at a high temperature and are fixed in the product. Neither the dishwasher nor sunlight will change the colour.

Sometimes a product is personalised with a printed text. However, this text may fade after a few years.

Use and maintenance

Why is it best to choose hard porcelain?

Hard porcelain has a luxury image and for good reason. The elegant, fine material is at the same time very sturdy and durable. Firing at the high temperature of 1,400°C gives you a hard, translucent product. Moreover, hard porcelain retains heat longer, so your food or drink stays hot longer in a porcelain plate or cup. So interesting to invest in.

What is the difference between porcelain and other ceramics?

Porcelain is fired very high and therefore becomes hard, translucent, non-porous and sounds clear, unlike pottery, for example.

Will my coffee/food stay hot longer in a porcelain cup/plate?

The thermal conductivity of earthenware and stoneware, at an average of 1.3, is slightly lower than that of porcelain. So the coffee, soup or food will stay hot longer in a porcelain cup or plate.

What is the best way to stack my porcelain?

Round plates can easily be stacked on top of each other. Square plates are best stacked at 45° to each other for greater stability.

When stacking, be especially careful not to rub the matt (bottom) side over the glossy (top) side. Porcelain is very hard and the shiny side will become matt because of the matt side.

A tip: use a napkin/plate pad made from recycled cotton between the plates, available through our atelier.

Cracks or fissures

If porcelain already has fissures or hairline cracks, it may crack further due to sudden temperature changes (in the oven). Porcelain is not resistant to sudden temperature changes. Therefore, never place a hot plate on a cold plate or vice versa.

How long can I replenish my Stockmans collection?

At Studio Pieter Stockmans, all tableware items are available separately and can be replenished, even if they are no longer in the current collection. In other words, even the next generation can replenish old collections. (This does not apply to limited editions or unique works of art).
